About VenueStats
VenueStats is a directory of sports stadiums and arenas. It has 989 venues across 11 leagues, and each one has its own page: when it opened, how many seats it holds, what it is called now and what it used to be called, where it is, and every team that has called it home.
What makes it different
Most of the facts here are available somewhere else, one venue at a time. What VenueStats adds is the joining. A stadium's page connects its name history to the teams that played in it, season by season, and ranks it against the other venues in each league. 26,764 team-seasons are matched to a home venue, which is what lets a page answer questions like where a team played before it moved in, or which building replaced another.
The other half is saying where each fact came from. Every venue page ends with a Sources section that names the sources behind that page and links the exact page each fact was read from. The Methodology page explains how the data is put together, and the Sources page lists every source with how much of the site rests on it.
Who runs it
VenueStats is made and maintained by Andy Carnevale, an independent developer. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any sports league, team or venue. Team and venue names belong to their owners and appear here only to identify them.
How it relates to ImperialismMap
VenueStats is a sibling of ImperialismMap, which draws the territory each team "owns" on a map of the country for every season. The two sites read from the same underlying records of teams, seasons and venues. Territories on ImperialismMap are drawn around each team's home venue, so the venue records here are the same ones that place teams on that map, and a correction made for one site shows up on the other.
Corrections and missing venues
The data is a work in progress, and some pages are thinner than others. If a figure is wrong, a venue is missing or a source is better than the one cited, please tell me through the Contact page with the address of the page and what it should say. Corrections are applied once in the database and appear everywhere that venue is used.
